Volkswagen C Coupe GTE concept debuts at Auto Shanghai 2015

Volkswagen has unveiled the C Coupe GTE saloon concept at Auto Shanghai 2015 in China.

This big luxury saloon is over five metres long, 1930mm wide and has a wheelbase of 3001mm.

Riding on huge 22-inch wheels the C Coupe GTE previews an upcoming design language, which will be used on high-end saloon using the VW badge.

The production version would not be a direct successor to the Phaeton, but would slot between the Passat and Phaeton, meaning Volkswagen will grow its lineup in the near future.

The interior is not too futuristic and typical to Volkswagen, featuring less buttons than the latest Passat thanks to a fully digital instrument cluster and a large touchscreen display.

At the rear are two separate seats, separated by a very sleek and clean centre console that features different functions to control the rear-seat entertainment system with dual displays mounted in the backrest of the front seats.

The concept is powered by a plug-in hybrid setup combining a four-cylinder TSI turbocharged petrol engine with 207bhp and an electric motor with 122bhp incorporated into an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Total output is 241bhp and 369 lb-ft of torque, taking the big saloon from 0-62mph in 8.6 seconds on to a top speed of 144mph. Range in EV mode is up to 31 miles and the top speed is 81mph. Average fuel economy is a very impressive 122.8 mpg with CO2 emissions of 55 g/km.
