Some of the new specs Match model features include front and rear parking sensors, front fog lights and a mirror pack, which consists of automatically-folding door mirrors with puddle lights and reverse-activated dipping on the nearside. New 16-inch ‘Dover’ alloys distinguish the Match.

The standard Golf is already impressively loaded with seven airbags, ABS with ESC, XDS electronic differential lock; an automatic post-collision braking system and Isofix preparation for two rear child seats.

The Match trim also adds standard ACC Adaptive Cruise Control with Front Assist and City Emergency Braking, a Driver Alert System, PreCrash preventive occupant protection, Driver Profile Selection, automatic wipers, an automatically dimming rear-view mirror and dusk sensor.

Top of the range model with a 148bhp 2.0-litre TDI linked to a 6-speed DSG delivers 62.8mpg and is priced from £24,120.

The most economical is a 104bhp 1.6-litre TDI with five-speed manual returning 74.3mpg.
