Spy Shots: 2012 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Winter Testing in Austria

The next-generation Mercedes S-Class mule has been spotted testing on Bosch’s new winter-test base in Austria.

Styling is expected to be influenced by the F700 concept that made its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2007. Compared to the current S-Class, the new one looks wider and also longer.

Under the bonnet, Mercedes will offer new ‘MoVe’ (modular V6- and V8) engines that feature direct injection and turbochargers. The biggest news is a plug-in hybrid version, that will accelerate to 60 mph in less than six seconds while averaging an impressive 60mpg.

The S63 AMG will get the new twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 instead of the current 6.3-litre V8. Rumor is also that the V12 engine in the S600 and S65 AMG may be discontinued.

As the testing continues we expect to see more prototypes with less disguise in the near future. Stay tuned for more!
