Spy Shots: 2012 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Winter Testing in Austria

The next-generation Mercedes S-Class mule has been spotted testing on Bosch’s new winter-test base in Austria.

Styling is expected to be influenced by the F700 concept that made its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2007. Compared to the current S-Class, the new one looks wider and also longer.

Under the bonnet, Mercedes will offer new ‘MoVe’ (modular V6- and V8) engines that feature direct injection and turbochargers. The biggest news is a plug-in hybrid version, that will accelerate to 60 mph in less than six seconds while averaging an impressive 60mpg.

The S63 AMG will get the new twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 instead of the current 6.3-litre V8. Rumor is also that the V12 engine in the S600 and S65 AMG may be discontinued.
