There have been plenty of concept cars, where the rear-view camera has been replaced with a camera, but for some reasons it has not yet made it into production vehicles.
Nissan is about to change it with a very clever Smart Rearview Mirror, which is much more than an LCD monitor showing the video feed from the high-resolution camera mounted on the rear of the vehicle.
What makes it very unique and special is the ability to switch between the built-in LCD monitor and the traditional rearview mirror, depending on the driver’s preference.
Nissan just did not attach existing technology to make the Smart rearview mirror, but they developed a high-performance, narrow-angle camera and a specially-shaped LCD monitor with a unique aspect ratio of approximately 4:1.
Nissan will introduce the Smart rearview mirror next week at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and the plan is to offer the product as a dealer option already this spring in the Japanese market. Global markets will follow in 2015.
