Just in time for this week’s Geneva Motor Show, Audi has unveiled the new second-generation R8 supercar. The design is evolutionary with a look that is much sharper and wider.
Riding on the all-new Audi Space Frame chassis, the new R8 is constructed in much bigger part from aluminium and carbon fibre than the outgoing model. As a result the car weighs up to 50 kg less than its predecessor. The top of the range R8 V10 plus has a dry weight of 1,454 kilograms. The car is also 40 percent more torsionally rigid.
Power continues to come from a naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 that is updated to produce 540 hp in the base model, good enough for a 0-62mph sprint in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 201mpg.
The new V10 Plus model packs 610 hp and 413 lb-ft, taking the new German supercar from 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds, 0-124 comes in under 10 seconds and the top speed is 205mph.
The updated engine also comes with direct and indirect injection, stop/start and cylinder deactivation systems, cutting fuel consumption by 10 percent.
Power is sent to the road via seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, a mechanical diff and a revised Quattro all-wheel drive system that can send 100 percent of available torque to either the front or rear axle.
The geometric lines continue inside, where the MMI monitor of the previous model is replaced with three central control elements of the air conditioning system and the wide console of the central tunnel accommodates the standard MMI terminal as well as the newly designed flat selector lever of the S tronic transmission.
The new R8 will also get the all-electric E-Tron model packing 456 horsepower and 679 lb-ft of torque with a range of up to 279 miles thanks to a new increased battery capacity from 49 kWh to 92 kWh. The new R8 E-Tron 2.0 goes from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 130mph or 155mph.
A new R8 LMS GT3 will follow next year.
The new Audi R8 is scheduled to go on sale this summer, with German prices starting at €165,000 for the base V10 and €187,400 for the R8 V10 Plus.
