Peugeot 308 gains a new 128bhp 1.2-litre turbo petrol, range is an impressive 1124 miles

Following the European Car of the Year 2014 award, the new Peugeot 308 got even more interesting with the addition of a new PureTech three-cylinder 128bhp 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, that has an impressive fuel economy of 99.1mpg and a range of 1124.7 miles on a full tank of fuel.

This performance was achieved at the Almeria circuit in Spain, where the 308 with the new 1.2-litre unit linked to a manual six-speed gearbox, was driven for over 32 hours to consume the 51.4-litre contents of its fuel tank.

The new 1.2-litre engine boasts a new compact design, a new technology, like high-pressure direct injection (200 bar) of the fuel system and a new generation high performance turbocharger (turning at 240,000 rev/min).

The new 308 is also available with a 120bhp BlueHDi 1.6-litre diesel engine, that delivers fuel economy of 91.1mpg and lowest CO2 sector emissions of just 82g/km.

In total there are five petrol engines available with power ranging from 82 to 156bhp and five diesels, with power ranging from 92 to 150bhp.

A more powerful GTI version is already in development with around 200bhp.
