Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the all-new GLE63 Coupe at the Detroit Auto Show to rival mainly the BMW X6 M and also Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.
Power comes from the familiar twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 found in most recent AMG models.
In the standard GLE63 Coupe, the twin-turbo V8 delivers 549bhp and 516 lb-ft of torque, while in the range-topping GLE63 S Coupe, the engine delivers an additional 28bhp and 44 lb-ft for a total of 577bhp and 560 lbft of torque.
The engine is connected to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission and a rear-biased 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, taking the standard model from 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds and the S model is 4.2 seconds. In comparison the X6 M does it in 4.2 seconds and the Cayenne Turbo S in 4.1 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph.
The hot AMG crossover is distinguished from the standard model with an aggressive front end featuring a single bar grille, gloss black flics, twin-dome bonnet, and large air intakes. LED headlights are standard, while at the rear we can see AMG four-tailpipe exhaust, new rear bumper and diffuser. All this rides on 22-inch lightweight alloy wheels (S model) with a titanium gray finish.
The interior reveals a flat-bottomed steering wheel, Nappa leather sports seats, revised instrument cluster with faux carbon fibre dials, stainless steel pedals AMG branded floor mats and a Harman Kardon audio system.
Other under the skin tweaks include an AMG Ride Control sports suspension, an Active Curve System, a Sports Direct-Steer steering system, high-performance braking system with ventilated and perforated discs.
The Mercedes-AMG GLE63 Coupe will go on sale in the UK in June.
