Mazda Reveals MX-5 and Mazda2 Black Limited Editions

2011 Mazda MX-5 Black Limited Edition

It would seem black is the new, er, black because a few days after Mercedes announced the C63 AMG Black Series, Mazda has revealed Black Limited Editions of the MX-5 and Mazda2.

Don’t get too excited though, because the Japanese company hasn’t copied the Germans by giving both collosal power upgrades — they are just cosmetic enhancements to celebrate Mazda’s participation in the Britcar GTN production car race series.

Picking up some themes (but not enough!) from the MX-5 GT race car, the MX-5 Black Limited Edition gets a black retractable hardtop, dark ‘gun metal’ 17 inch alloy wheels, black leather seats with sand coloured stitching, a black steering wheel and dashboard and ‘Black Limited Edition’ badging and floor mats.  The interior also receives a numbered plaque showing where in the production build of just 500 cars this was.

The car also picks up features from the Sport Tech trim line, including climate control, an upgraded Bose sound system, Bluetooth, front fog lights and cruise control.

The engine is a four cylinder 2.0 litre petrol with 160PS, good for the 0-62mph dash in 7.9 seconds on the way to a 136mph max.   Fuel consumption is 36.2mpg combined, CO2 emissions are 181g/km.  These are all the same as the standard 2.0 Sport Tech model (which is £390 cheaper by the way).

The MX-5 Black Limited Edition is priced at £22,995 on the road.

If you’re not excited by that then the Mazda2 Black Limited Edition won’t do it for you either.  Again, with cosmetic changes rather than mechanical, the new model adds a black vinyl roof — when was the last time you saw a car with a vinyl roof?! — matt black 16 inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, privacy glass and a “rear bumper sports trim”.

Inside, you get climate control, a Parrot Bluetooth hands-free system, electric rear windows, plus unique ‘Black Edition’ exterior badging, uniquely numbered interior plaque (they are making 618 total of this car) and Limited Edition floor mats.

Based on the Mazda2 Tamura, the four cylinder 1.3 litre petrol engine has 84PS, does 0-62mph in 13.6 seconds and tops out at 109mph.  Fuel consumption is55.4mpg, CO2 emissions 119g/km.

The Mazda2 Black Limited Edition costs £12,395 (OTR) for the True Red version and £12,815 for the other metallic and pearlescent colours.  The model on which it is based costs £11,830.

Both cars are on sale now.
