Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang revealed as the most track-capable Mustang ever

In addition to the all-new GT carbon fibre supercar, Ford has also unveiled the hot Shelby GT350R Mustang at the Detroit Auto Show.

The Shelby GT350R Mustang builds on the recently unveiled the Shelby GT350 Mustang, with aero improvements, weight savings, more power and a highly developed suspension.

Ford proudly calls it the most race-ready road-legal Mustang ever.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V8 with more than 500bhp and 400 lb-ft of torque linked to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, along with a tuned limited-slip Torsen differential with 3.73 axle ratio and electronically modulated rear-mounted air-to-oil differential cooler, which maintains ideal temperatures during track driving.

The engine output is not the main thing here and it is also not known how much more it delivers than in the standard GT350 as Ford has not confirmed the final specs for the standard model either.

There is also a specially tuned suspension fitted with revised spring rates and antiroll bars, lower ride height, unique track-tuned alignment settings, revised bushings and jounce bumpers, cross-axis ball joints in the front suspension, and revised calibration controlling the MagneRide dampers.

The GT350R Mustang is around 59kg lighter than the non R model with the Track Pack thanks to the removal of air conditioning, the stereo system, rear seats, trunk floorboard and carpet, backup camera and emergency tyre sealer and inflator. Exhaust resonators are also removed for weight savings with the benefit of creating a sharper exhaust tone.

The Shelby GT350R rides on lightweight 19-inch carbon fibre wheels in standard, saving close to 6kg per wheel.

Optionally dual-zone air conditioning, 8-inch touch screen with navigation, seven-speaker audio system, turn signal mirrors and more is available for those who seek comfort as well.

Aerodynamic updates include bonnet vent, lift reduction, underbody belly pans front and rear, an aggressive diffuser, updated front splitter, carbon fibre rear wing, vented wheel wells and turbulence-reducing fender vents, wheel air curtains and side skirts.

The limited-production Shelby GT350R Mustang will be available in the United States and Canada later this year, and it is unlikely we will see it in Europe.
