Don Wales and the Bluebird Electric team have set a new date for start ing their preparations for the UK Land Speed Record at Pendine Sands in Wales — the 13th and 14th August.
If you associate EVs with snail pace G-Whizzes then think again — the Bluebird EV is hoping to crack 500mph when it takes on the challenge in 2013. Preparations are under way and this weekend will see a shake-down test of the car in the hands of Don Wales, grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell OBE and nephew of Donald Campbell CBE, both speed record breakers in their time.
The 4 mile (6km) stretch of sand in South Wales will need clearing and the success of the runs relies on the support of volunteer marshalls. The Bluebird Electric Team invites the public to come along and help, as well as to cheer on the 30-man team. The runs on both days will start from 1:00pm.
Pendine Sands has seen many Land Speed Record attemps, with both Malcolm and Donald Campbell having raced Bluebirds there before. As well as hoping to make the record books, Don Wales and his team are raising awareness of their chosen charities — Help for Heroes, Wessex Heartbeat and The Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals.
