All-new Audi A3 Cabriolet revealed ahead of Frankfurt debut

Audi has unveiled the new A3 Cabriolet, ahead of its public debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show next week.

The new A3 Cabriolet is the fourth-model in all-new A3 range and comes with an automatic fabric roof, which opens and closes hydraulically in less than 18 seconds and is fully concealed from view when retracted.

From launch three engines will be offered: 138bhp 1.4 TFSI with cylinder-on-demand, 177bhp 1.8 TFSI and a 148bhp 2.0 TDI.

The manual transmission-equipped 148bhp 2.0 TDI is the most fuel efficient with a combined fuel consumption of 67.3 mpg and CO2 emissions of 110g/km.

The compact A3 cabrio also gets quattro all-wheel drive and advanced options including Audi connect with 4G/LTE high-speed internet connectivity.

Compared to the outgoing model the new cabriolet has grown from 4.24 to 4.42 metres in length, its wheelbase from 2.58 to 2.60 metres and its width from 1.77 to 1.79 metres.

Two numbers are down also – the height (1.41 metres) is down by 15mm, making the new model much sportier and sleeker. Overall weight is also down by around 50hp with the entry level model weighing 1,365 kilograms.

Luggage capacity has also grown by 60 litres with improved access.

Ordering books open in late October with first customers receiving their cars here in March 2014.

The S3 Cabriolet with a 2.0 TFSI producing 296bhp and 380 Nm of torque will follow soon. Linked to a standard six-speed S tronic transmission, it can accelerate from 0.62mph in 5.4 seconds and has a fuel economy of 39.8mpg.
