Alfa Romeo 4C weighs just 895 kg, packs 240 hp

Alfa Romeo has unveiled new details about the 4C that is scheduled for first deliveries in September.

The 4C weighs just 895 kg – around 400kg less than the new Porche Cayman S.

It is a true masterpiece with the carbon fibre monocoque weighing just 65 kg. The 4C also has a supercar like weight/power ratio of less than 4 kg/HP.

10% of 4C is carbon fibre, which represents 25% of the 4C overall volume.

Hybrid brakes also save 2kg per disc, window are 10 per cent thinner than normal and a special lightweight plastic is used for the bumpers and wings.

The body is built from a material called Sheet Moulding Compound, that is about 20 per cent lighter than sheet steel. It’s also resistant to corrosion.

The Alfa Romeo 4C gets its power from a 1.75-litre four-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque linked to a dual-clutch transmission, enabling it to hit 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds, that is four-tenths quicker than Cayman S.

Pricing details for the standard model have not been announced yet, but the special Launch Edition version costs 60,000 EUR (£51,500).
