2015 Volkswagen Golf R Variant spied undisguised

Volkswagen Golf range is bigger than ever with a very wide range of engines.

The new Golf Variant is the roomiest of the range and soon will be available as a hot R model, as we can see from these new spy shots from around and on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

The prototype is virtually undisguised, revealing familiar R model specific updates like a new front bumper, new rear bumper and new wheels. There is even the R badge on the grille. At the back are single oval exhaust tips on both sides, though this might change as the hatch version of the Golf R has quad exhaust setup.

Under the bonnet is most likely the same 296bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 380 Nm of torque as in the hatch. Power is sent to the road via Haldex 4MOTION four-wheel drive system. The hatch goes from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds when fitted with the optional six-speed DSG gearbox, and our guess is the Variant will be just a bit slower, due to bigger size and added weight.

The Golf R Variant also sits about 20mm lower that the standard model as it equipped with specially tuned springs and dampers.

Public debut is most likely at the Paris Motor Show in October with sales starting soon after.
