2014 BMW i8 - official specs released ahead of Frankfurt debut

BMW recently unveiled the i brand’s first product, the i3.

Today specifications for the upcoming 2+2 i8 plug-in hybrid sports car were released ahead of its public debut next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Power comes from a turbocharged 1.5-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine with 231 hp and 320 Nm of torque and an electric motors that produces another 131 hp and 250 Nm of torque. The electric motor powers the front wheels, while the petrol engine powers the rear wheels. Both engines can work independently or together producing a combined power output of 362 hp and 570 Nm of torque.

Expected 0–62 mph sprint time is 4.5 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. All-electric driving range is up to 22 miles with a top speed of 75 mph.

The average fuel consumption of the BMW i8 is over 113 mpg with CO2 emissions of less than 59 grams per kilometre.

The i8 rides on LifeDrive architecture with an aluminium chassis for the powertrain and a carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell.

Overall weight is less than 1,490 kilograms.
