1967 Toyota 2000GT sold for $1.16 million - the most expensive Asian car ever sold

The Toyota 2000GT was first displayed in public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1965 and was manufactured under contract by Yamaha between 1967-1970. Just 351 models were built and this two-seat, front-engine, rear-wheel drive coupe was the first car to demonstrate that Japanese auto manufacturers could produce a sports car to rival those of Europe.

Recently a 1967 Toyota 2000GT was sold by RM Auctions for $1.16 million (£748,000), making it the most expensive Asian car ever sold. Out of 351 units just 62 were left hand cars just like the one sold by RM Auctions.

This classic yellow 2000GT changed owners also back in 2011 for just $650,000. Not a bad investment at all. Almost double the purchase price two years ago.

The 2000GT is powered by a 2.0-litre straight-six with 150 hp linked to a five speed manual.
