1963 Ferrari 250 GTO sells for a record breaking $52 million

A rare 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO has become the most expensive car ever sold. This classic Ferrari was bought last month in a private sale by an unidentified buyer from collector Paul Pappalardo for a mind blowing $52 million (£32 million).

This specific 250 GTO has a chassis number 5111 and back in 1963 it won the Tour de France road race with French driver Jean Guichet behind the steering wheel.

Last year another 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO driven by Sir Stirling Moss was sold for $35 million (£21 million).

Between 1962 and 1964 Ferrari produced 39 250 GTOs. When new, the GTO was priced at $18,000 (£11k) in the United States, and buyers had to be personally approved by Enzo Ferrari and his dealer for North America, Luigi Chinetti.
